March Newsletter from Big Sky Region

APRIL 5: BSR’S QUIZ AND RESEARCH FAIR IN HAMILTON!!!

March 1: BSR Spring Meeting, Fairmont Hot Springs, along with the most fantastic “C” Retreat.  A special thank you to all who attended BSR meeting, you proved to be brave souls as weather was pretty bad.  The weather caused Storm Castle to turn back, we missed having them.

March 1 & 2: The “C” Retreat was the greatest!  I think almost every C was there and they had the most wonderful time.  Kara Hagerman, the visiting instructor did a terrific job as always.  Kids love her and learned so-o much.   A MILLION THANK YOU’S TO NANCY CARMAN ARE HOSTING THIS RETREAT. WE REALLY APPRECIATED YOUR ORGANIZATION!!! WOW!!! WHAT MEMORIES THEY HAVE MADE!!

Our Round Tables turned into good discussions; we loved sharing information and ideas.  Your input was very helpful; we have such hard working and willing people in our group.  What a great team we have!

Chan Carman gave her report on the National Youth Congress and newly formed NYC board.  She has been appointed to this board and will work closely with the Board of Governors.  This will be a great opportunity and they are lucky to have her!

Patty, Jaime Clark and Chan, will be heading up our Travel Teams.  These teams will go to your club throughout the summer with older members teaching unmounted.  Adult instructors will also travel to teach riding sessions.  You can request having a team teaching unmounted and/or mounted, your club will provide gas, and food and over night stay, if needed.  The visiting riding instructor will charge 15.00 per student.  This is a great opportunity for clubs to interact, make sure we are all on the right track and will help older pcers with their teaching requirements.  Everyone WINS!!

JULY 11: HB rating in Billings.  Nancy Carman has worked with National, they will send Examiners.  Great job!

Upper rating candidates will be required to attend 2 preps and 1 rally according to National and BSR.  The preps scheduled will be:
APRIL 25, 26, 27, Terri Rocovich (one day will be prep)
MAY 31, JUNE 1, Richard Lamb May 30, Open Clinic
JUNE 21-27, Herron Park Camp
Laura Wolfe, Powderhouse will be in charge of the Rocovich and Lamb clinics.
She will schedule one day prep if there are enough candidates.  CONTACT LAURA NOW, SHE NEEDS TO PLAN!!   May 30 is an open clinic with Richard Lamb.

JUNE 12-14: D Camp, East, Beartooth and Sunlight hosting.
JULY 14-16: D Camp West, Five Valleys and Bitterroot hosting.
                                                                 2
HM CLINIC’S to be held in east and west, dates to be decided by Nancy Weist and Gail Wilder, HMO’s.

JUNE 21-24, DANIEL STEWART CLINIC, SEMINAR: I should have explained more at the meeting so here goes!!  The BSR will host a clinic with Daniel Stewart, opened to public on JUNE 21, we will also host a Seminar with Daniel opened to public on Sat. night.  Both will be fund raisers to help defray costs for Daniel at camp.
Daniel Stewart is a Bonus for campers; he is in addition to the regular camp agenda.  Herron Park Camp will be run the same as always with the exception that each child will have a day with Daniel Stewart.  We have planned fund raisers, plus are expecting extra campers as a result of having the chance to work with Daniel Stewart.

JUNE 22-27, HERRON PARK CAMP: Sally Rohletter is in the process of getting really great instructors for camp, it is going to be a spectacular time.  Many thanks to Sally for organizing camp, she and her pony club do a great job.  This is a major undertaking and takes a lot of dedication and hard work.
Please offer your help and support to them, I am sure they will appreciate you.  Extra hands and bodies are always welcome!

AUGUST 14, 15: BSR’S EVENT RALLY, scheduled at Rebecca Farm.  How many pony clubbers would get a chance to ride there!! Thank you Sarah Kelly for being so generous, we really appreciate this opportunity.  Our committee will be Patty Clark, Sarah Kelly, Diane Maxted, and Char Harmon.  We are considering this (may be) a Qualifying Rally as Championships, West will be to CO in 09.

We handed out our RAFFAL TICKETS; each club will have a numbered amount.   What an easy sell they will be, the winner will have their horse or pet hand painted by Missoula artist, Susan Carlson.  We all want one!  Thanks to Susan for doing this, we can’t wait to see the results.  Suggestion: give tickets to each child in an envelope to put stubs into and return to DC.  Dc will return to Patty Clark by June 18 for drawing at camp!!

Thank you again for all who attended those who tried and those who had mares due!

YOU REALIZE YOU ARE A TRUE MONTANA “WINTER” PONY CLUBBER WHEN:

  1. You feed hay on a sleigh.
  2. You chisel piles of frozen manure out of your corrals.
  3. A storm is coming and you spend the night worrying that you should have blanketed.
  4. You go to school with fuzzy, frizzy hair from wool hats and you have to pick hay out of it.  Your nose so red you look like Rudolph.
  5. When riding boots give way to warm winter ones but you still sting your feet  when you dismount.
  6. When bareback pads or warm pony backs become more preferable to cold saddles.
  7. You keep your bridle in your bedroom to keep bit warm.   Pony is happy but Mom isn’t.
  8. You have to let your bridle out 2 notches everywhere to fit your fuzz ball’s head.
  9. Use your hair dryer to thaw frozen horse whiskers.
  10. The hay stack you planned is looking a little slim because you have to feed more to keep up with cold weather.
  11. Your favorite outdoor appliance is a water heater and flash light.
  12. You have to feel into fur for ribs, to be sure pony is getting enough to eat.
  13. You are thankful when it snows, no one can even see manure piles.
  14. Your next year’s calendar is filled up and it is only November.
  15. You try to make up your mind which upper level rating to apply for before Feb. 1!
  16. Thankful your friends have an indoor arena.
  17. Your Mom or Dad slide off frozen roads trying to get you to indoor arena.
  18. Wanting to race across the fields when you know you can’t.
  19. Explaining to Mom or Dad why you need ice skates for winter but horse doesn’t.
  20. Explaining why horse doesn’t need shoes during winter but you still need Farrier .
  21. When friends come over to see your beautiful, mighty steed and instead see a pot- bellied wooly mammoth, you explain it’s, “a diamond in the ruff” sort of thing.
  22. You see a little excited when seeing the first Robin of spring but it doesn’t compare to finding out your horse is beginning to shed his winter hair!!

Logan added:

  1. When it takes you 20 minutes to get the bridle off because your fingers are completely numb!
  2. You walk miles and miles in the snow to get a pony and it trots to the gate!
